Sky Sailing, new Owl City, and Goodbye Dubai

Sky Sailing

Before Owl City, when Adam Young was still a sleep deprived nobody living in his parent's basement in Minnesota, there was Sky Sailing. I don't know much more about Sky Sailing except that "An Airplane Carried me to Bed" releases July 13 for the US.

Adam Young said he's been vigorously working on a new record/album. This will be his fourth official release, however it is really his second "mainstream" record, since Ocean Eyes that released Summer '09.

In an interview with Relient K's Matt Thiessen on the most recent album, Forget and Not Slow Down, the lead singer announced that he and Adam Young would be working on a side project titled "Goodbye Dubai." Adam Young helped produce the B-side "Terminals," which can be listened to on YouTube; I imagine GD will sound a lot like Terminals.

All sounds cool to me; I love Owl City...the whole sound is shimmery and happy and really just feel-good - a quick break from reality for me, really.

Sky Sailing didn't create quite the same feel, but it's still really neat music. And I've yet to hear Goodbye Dubai.

I like the feel of Sky Sailing, because I can kind of relate to it more - it gives off those funky vibes that speak to you, ya dig?

I've only heard the 3-4 songs they released on YouTube - I can't really judge it yet. I'm sure I'll develop a different opinion once I have the album...thing is, I can't separate Sky Sailing from Owl City in my head yet, even though they have two different sounds. I'm sure once I do that, I'll enjoy them a whole lot more.

Sky Sailing has more of an "in-touch with real life" feel to it, whereas most of Owl City is just for fun. I kind of prefer Sky Sailing more because of this.

I mean, really - Owl City isn't half-bad. There's so much worse stuff - I don't understand why so many people hate them. It's just a catchy, fun band, and I like them for that.

Then, I've always been open to anything...I have blues, dance, drum n' bass, electronica, folk, funk, garage rock, grunge, hard rock, hip-hop, Irish punk, metal, new wave, nu-metal, old skool rap, pop, pop/rock, prog, punk-pop, punk-rap, punk rock, rap-metal, reggae, rock, rock latino, skank, soft rock, southern rock, synth rock, techno, trance, and 60's pop. And that's not really everything. My library spans from 1950 to 2010, and there's stuff I love about every genre and every year of music I have. If a band is good - give 'em a chance. And I firmly believe that Adam Young makes creative enough music to be considered "good".
