png's don't support animation.
Yeah the picture gets more pixely.

It's not GIMP that causes the problem, it's just GIF, the format. Sorry but GIF will be worse quality than normal PNG style ones.

Also, did you try a gradient in the background or is that just originally pixeled like that? I'm wondering because it doesn't seem like the quality would be that bad. Another tip off is that the Mod badge isn't that pixeled looking.
