You press Ctrl+N and choose transparent as your Background contents, or just erase away the unwanted area ;)

Make something transparent or start with a transparent backround?

If make something transparent:

1. Press "New" to make a new document.
2. In "Backround Contents" choose "Transparent."
3. Put in your item/object.
4. Erase around the focal, leaving transparent around.

There are many ways.

When making a new project (signature, avatar, etc.) make sure that it is set to Transparent. This will start you off with a transparent canvas to work with.

If you want to make something a little more transparent, change the Opacity in the layers menu.

If you want to make parts of an image transparent, click on the eraser tool. Then change the opacity of the eraser at the top bar.

Also, you can put the opacity of the eraser to 100% to erase whole parts of an image.

If you need anymore help, just ask.

You either use the magic wand tool, or path tool to render something but if you already have a render, than just delete the BG image, or make it transparent when you make a new doc.
