I don't like this new background.

Has too much of a forced focal/effects. It's drawing all the attention to it.

Maybe fade it out some more and It'd be better.

I agree with Karma. Maybe just a few repeating penguins on a gradients, with the penguin blended in.

It's better than seeing the same shadow over and over again... but I'm not even looking at the text as I type. I'm looking at the annoying penguins with red proppeller caps and red whistles... it reminds me of the days those came out for the first time... NOOOO

The topic icons you get to choose from when making a thread? Those are the font Andys.
