| Hey - the soundtrack for the movie Alice In Wonderland (March 2010) got leaked the other day. I heard it on Grooveshark. It's basically a bunch of really mainstream artists doing some not-so-mainstream songs. Pretty cool, in my opinion. Go check it out (grooveshark.com, search Almost Alice). What d'you guys think?
Track-by-track review in the spoiler.
- Spoiler:
Alice (Underground): It’s a good introduction track, and while I’ve never particularly enjoyed Avril Lavigne’s music, this song is pretty good to me. I enjoyed it, anyway. Really gets you to realize this album isn’t quite so conventional. 3.5/5
The Poison: I was surprised by this one; one of the best tracks I’ve heard from AAR. The lyrics are hallowing and creepy, while at the same time the song is beautiful. The “falling-down” piano sounds really cool when the song picks up. I also like the acute lack of electric guitar, relying almost entirely on acoustic, piano, and drums to make this song what it is - and it works so good. 5/5
The Technicolor Phase: Always been one of my favorite Owl City songs, and it really fits the soundtrack. While I wish Adam Young recorded a new song for this record, I love it nonetheless. 5/5
Her Name Is Alice: The first track that really comes off as weird on the record, but it’s a good kind of weird. The speaking (Alice?) at the beginning and end is interesting, and the song itself is catchy and will probably wind up stuck in your head after a listen or two. 5/5
Painting Flowers: I wasn’t sure what to expect from All Time Low on this record, being that they generally appeal to tween girls (myself being an exception). This song proved to show off Alex Gaskarth’s vocals a lot better than any of All Time Low’s previous songs really have, and when he sings quietly in the verses, he doesn’t even sound like the same singer. This song is great, and it makes me wish All Time Low experimented a little bit more than they do. 5/5
Where’s My Angel?: I checked out Metro Station a while back, and I can’t say I really liked anything except the catchy “Shake It”. And while this song is by no means a masterpiece, it’s definitely catchy, fun, and kind of dark at the same time. It’s an enjoyable track, for sure. 4/5
Strange (feat. Kerli): A friend with relatively no taste at all in music recommended I check out Tokio Hotel. Never got around to it. I was scared to hear this song, but it was a pleasant surprise. Dark and kinda sad, the song as a whole really sounds great. Kerli’s vocals in particular really shine, and the song made me eager to hear Kerli’s addition to Almost Alice. 5/5
Follow Me Down (feat. Neon Hitch): I love 3OH!3, but this song definitely took some getting used to. It’s a lot more stripped than most of 3OH!3’s works, considering the duo tends to layer their songs on rather thick - there’s always a lot going on. After you get used to the quirky verses and the catchy chorus, though, it turns out to be an awesome song. Not completely sure what I think of Neon Hitch’s voice, though. 5/5
Very Good Advice: Didn’t really like this one the first time around. A couple listens later, though, I realized it’s catchy with cool lyrics, even if it’s slow and kind of strange. But then, this whole album is pretty strange. The iTunes review also says that the song is based on some old ’51 Disney song, so I have to give The Cure’s Robert Smith credit for making it sound so good. 5/5
In Transit (feat. Pete Wentz): Not sure where Pete Wentz is on this song, exactly - Mark Hoppus could just as easily be playing bass. If that’s even what Wentz is doing on the song. Anyway, the piano’s good and the song sounds nice, the lyrics are great, but there’s not a very good hook anywhere in the track. I still love it, though, and it could have easily been an addition/bonus track on (+44)’s “When Your Heart Stops Beating”. But I gotta say, it fits much better on here. 4/5
Welcome To Mystery: I’ve never been particularly keen on the Plain White T’s, but at least I can say I’m not embarrassed to have this song in my library. While it’s nothing really special, it is pretty catchy, has nice vocals and instrumentation, and is a decent track overall - just nothing special. 3.5/5
Tea Party: Like I said before, I was eager to hear Kerli’s track. So I was pretty surprised by this hip-hop addition to Almost Alice. I listened to it a couple times, though, and the lyrics are fun, the beat is great, and it’ll wind up stuck in your head. Not to mention her voice is a thousand times better than that of artist’s like Ke$ha. In fact, if this girl replaced Ke$ha at the top of the charts, I might be somewhat satisfied with today’s popular music. 4/5
The Lobster Quadrille: I checked out Franz Ferdinand and recognized two of the band’s popular songs. I still can’t figure out this song. It’s incredibly weird, remarkably catchy, and the band’s lead singer sings insanely low. I do like it, but it’s really, REALLY strange. 3/5
Always Running Out Of Time: Hah, love Motion City. This track is, thankfully, really good. It does lack the moog, but most of MCS’s “My Dinosaur Life” does, too - and this song is acoustic anyway, so it wouldn’t have fit so great. I love the lyrics, and it fits snugly in the record. 5/5
Fell Down A Hole: Possibly one of the best songs on the entire album (and the longest), Wolfmother’s “Fell Down A Hole” is the only song that really rocks. And it does a dang good job of it, too. The song is filled with great vocals, nice hooks, and rockin’ guitar parts. Indisputably great song, and it’s made me really keen on hearing some more of this band. 5/5
White Rabbit: Not one of my favorites. I wasn’t totally sure what to expect from a band called Grace Potter And The Nocturnals, and while she proved herself a great singer on this track, I can’t say I’m particularly fond of it. There’s just nothing that really catches my interest here. Still a nice song, though. 4/5
They Might Be Giants’ “You Are Old, Father William” and Danny Elfman’s “Alice’s Theme” haven’t been leaked yet.

| Yeah, I agree...I really hope they actually use these song in the movie. I've seen a couple that release great soundtracks but then only have the movie score actually featured. ~Egaro | |

| I really, REALLY hate this movie.
First of all, the Hatter was in ONE chapter of Adventures Of Alice In Wonderland. So why does Depp get second billing? Because if his name is on it, it'll make money. The queen looks like a bobble head... The CGI on it is frightening(ly bad), I've seen not one mention of the Cheshire Cat, Mock Turtle, Mad Hare, or Centipede anywhere in the commercials... Why? Because Depp sells.
I loved the Cheshire Cat, too....

| I've seen Cheshire Cat, but not all that much. I'm honestly going MAINLY because of Cheshire Cat. | |

| @KD- Yeah, you're right - they're definitely using Depp's name to sell. I could honestly care less about him, though. Also, this movie's apparently supposed to be a sequel to Alice In Wonderland, so I'm guessing they'll throw the Mad Hatter in a lot more. Which probably won't be good, but whatever.
@HP- Same. I think I saw the Cheshire Cat in one trailer before Avatar, and that was really it. A couple of web ads and maybe on the MySpace too.
