The Funeral.
n. funeral (plural funerals)
A ceremony to honour of a deceased person.
Or in this case, treasured friend and pet.
Today was a very sad day. My cat, Kyle, died early this morning of old age (we think.) He was almost 14 years old.
He has been with our family since before I was born, we got him in 1997. I have never seen a day without Kyle (except when on vacation/away at camp), but tomorrow will be the first day I won't see him.
You are probably laughing. That's okay. For a minute I laughed in relief when his chest rose and fell, until I realized he was on my dad's chest.
Here are the poems we read:
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die...
God saw you getting tired,
When a cure was not to be.
So He wrapped his arms around you,
and whispered, "come to me."
You didn't deserve what you went through,
So He gave you rest.
God's garden must be beautiful,
He only takes the best
And when I saw you sleeping,
So peaceful and free from pain
I could not wish you back
To suffer that again.

He is succeeded by two half-brothers, Arthur (who we own) and Trouble.
Also, one of my snails died. It was a good snail, and it kept the tank clean. So we gave him a grave and buried him as well. Here is the poem I read for him:
In one of the stars, I shall be living.
In one of them, I shall be laughing.
And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing
When you look at the sky at night.

September 3, 2009-February 12, 2010
He is succeeded by a brother, Horton, and two tank-mate fish.
So now I am very sad to have lost them, especially Kyle. He was always there, in my bed, waiting for me. But now he will never go there. Never again shall I hear his warm, loving purr against my cheek.
